[FAQ] What is phpNuke?

"I think this site looks great and I'd love to have a site like this - but what exactly does it do?"

phpNuke is one of a series of programs called "Community Portals". A Portal is very much like a shopping centre or mall. The front page of a site like Nukies is like the front windows and doors showing you glimpses of what is inside. Once you have registered, it is like going into the centre or mall and finding out what is there. There are "Sections", "Modules", etc and other areas which hold all manner of information about each site's topic area. Many have a community forum. The "Blocks" can either hold relevant information about the site or can be links to other areas of the site. Most sites require you to register before you get to see everything. Some sites will show you more upon registration and then require you to be an active member - scoring points - to view everything.

So, back to the mall example - each area is like it's own individual shop in the mall. You could also look upon the forums as a centre meeting area - bit like a coffee shop.

"Who uses these portals and what for?"
They have varied uses but one that is quite common is housing Role Playing sites. Here the Admin can create the players "Clans" and can partition sections of the site off for individual clans. Business' use them often either for advertising or more prominantly for employees sites. Somewhere where the employees can meet, chat learn about relevant company news, and sometimes have a bit of fun!. These are often restricted to employee use only.

They can also be used for housing online shops and advertising galleries. To learn more about phpNuke's varied uses, visit the downloads section on Nukies - it will explain what the downloads are and you can see that you can use your phpNuke site for just about anything.
