[FAQ] Ported phpBB - what is it?

phpBB stands for php Bulletin Board or as you and I call it - a forum. phpBB is a "stand alone" forum in it's own right. You may come across many on the web. They are a very easy to use and stable forum system - again written in php.

You cannot use an ordinary phpBB board in phpNuke. They are "ported" to work specifically within the phpNuke system. In computing, most peripherals such as your scanner or printer are connected to your CPU. The wire from the printer etc, is put into a socket which carries a port number. The port is then configured to transfer the information from that peripheral.

phpBB for phpNuke is very similar - except there is no wires connecting the forum to the portal. However, there is special coding in phpNuke's phpBB that means it can run without conflict within phpNuke. These phpBB's have been specially coded and therefore they interact perfectly with phpNuke. Never try to upload a standalone phpBB forum into phpNuke as it will not work. There are ways of transferring a standalone phpBB into phpNuke - but this requires knowing something of MyphpAdmin database program, which you will more than likely have in you CP, (Control Panel for your website). Do not try this unless you are sure you know what you are doing. And ALWAYS back up your databases and download to your machine before altering any database.

The themes for the standalone phpBB WILL NOT work on your phpNuke site. There are specially modified ported themes which do work. You can find some of these in the downloads section on Nukies and also do a search on Google for "phpNuke themes". phpBB standalone forums do not use themes they use "skins".

There are not many other types of forum ported for phpNuke yet. Splatt! is out there but I suggest you don't go there! I have yet to find anyone who has had great luck with a ported Invision Board - though these again are extremely good and stable standalones and I would love to see further developement on this.
