New Users

Hi Im new to this. Just installed everything and all is ok except new users. I signed up to my site as a new user from homepage just to check it works. I dont receive any emails from the system or anything like it says. Also as the php admin how do i know there are new users waiting for account activation. I dont receive no emails or any messages. How does this work? Sad
