Opinion Wanted - Please Vote
Although this site still gets a helluva lot of hits there doesn't seem to be much forum activity anymore, is it worth leaving the site up? should I use it for something else? should I just close it.
Vote please.
this site has proved invaluable to me in this last couple of years.
i may not be very php-savy, but i have tried to help where i can - although i have been in a position of asking for help more often.
if you feel you have the resources to keep the site alive i would very much appreciate it. even if no new posts were made, i would still find it a great resource by searching through the older posts for help.
however, if you've gone off phpnuke (and who wouldn't considering the amount of patching required, especially in the later versions), nobody would blame you for turning your back on it.
As I have offered you a while ago, I could host this site for you if there are any other reasons then the traffic gained and the forum activity of this website.
I vote Leave this site up, as I believe there is a ton of info for PHP-Nuke users/starters.
BL
There's no current (financial) problem leaving it running BL I just don't like to see it sitting here stagnant.
To be fair this topics response says it all, 3 poll votes and 2 replies, that leads me to feel the site is being used all that much even though last months page views were 600,000+

To be honest, many topics have stated people should use the search facility. By doing that they are probably finding the answer and not having to post as often.
I personally have found a few answers and only needed to start one topic.
As BL said, there is loads of info here and sometimes, even I find what I want.

Thats what I ment. Lot of info that can be found using the search function.
Darren,
if you want to attract people to visit the site, you have to "change" contents over and over again.
Really, I find it difficult to first attract people and then to keep them coming back. Your site has to be dynamic. Full of new stuff put it by the webmaster and the team. Over and over again. I'm honest, I lack my present here at this site as well as my own support site. But, if the website is up-to-date by meanings of the downloads, extra content, special stuff that seperate this website from the rest, the site will gain traffic by real human beings, instead of the bots. I'm not a traffic consultant, but you have the attract people every day. And from that group you'll always find people who are keeping this site alive. A small group, but who are dedicated to what they are doing.
My thoughts,
BL
I agree in as much as when new people do post a question they are immediatley jumped on and told
"Try the search facility
" or "Can you not see the idiots guide link??"
Believe me I KNOW it's annoying having people ask the same questions over and over again but on the same token I find if I cant find the answers I want on other sites by using search I am loath to ask for fear of being
at for not being 'intelligent' enough to figure out search.
On my fora I tend to reply to repeat questions with a link to the answer and remind people that there is a search...
A lot of people needing answers are 'newbies' and may not have the Nuke Lingo yet so will ask for things like "How do I change what the link says on the top under my banner?"
They are then told "
Well if you bothered to do a search for change navigation links or even looked in your header.php............"
See what I mean? After reading posts like that on other sites I try not to ask 'dumb' questions.. if I can't figure it out I end up calling D...
I have no desire to be humiliated on web fora.
Why not send a news letter out to all members reminding them that this place is still here and invite them to come back and let us know how their sites are doing, what tips and tricks they have learnt, how they are dealing with any issues on 7.7 and above... etc etc.... perhaps have a best site competition where members send screen shots of their sites in and we all vote for the best one to be then featured on the home page...
Also as an after thought..... a lot of newbies are installing unsupported nuke versions. They DO come here for advice but find red text telling them they aren't supported, if they do post they are told in no uncertain terms their version isnt welcome.
Perhaps a forum category for Nuke 7.7 and above could be created where members are told why it isnt supported and given support on how to downgrade their version?
People may be more inclined to stay, read, downgrade and join in that way???
I dunno.... just some thoughts
Oh and no, dont get rid of the site.... it's been invaluable to me over the past 3 years.... I'm sure others agree.

Although you couldnt exactly say I have been an avid user i have decided latly to get back involved, (I would like my retired tag removed please, hint hint) not sure exactly what I am going to do but would like to have this site to visit. I would also make an offer like bluelion that if it was going to be closed down due to inactivtiy I would gladly take it over (some might say again

)
Perhaps the site should be expanded and a workgroup (ohh yeah you like that) setup to explore new uses or content for the site. !!

I'm sure that's exactly what http://phpnuke-uk.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=26050 does.
Ok then, lets discuss this, who wants me to remove all the red text around the site saying we dont support 7.7 onwards? who wants to now answer questions on these versions?
Let yourselves be known and if that's what admin/mods etc want I'll do away with all the *** WE DO NOT SUPPORT PHPNUKE 7.7-7.9 READ THIS FOR INFO ON ALTERNATE VERSIONS. ***
If that was done then it may create a bit busier and more interactive site, how ever those statments could be simply, We RECOMMEND you dont use over 7.7 and so on.
Darren,
do you think its quiet here because there ain't support for those versions?
Believe me, you would have much of forum posts if you would support those versions! But all about the same: "I got hacked", "My database is deleted", "Help, I got a hacker message on my website url".
Again, it's not about if you support the versions or not. The website has to be interactive and attractive. If that is what you want, I'm here to make this website an even bigger success. I'm not saying it is boring here, but removing the red messages isn't the right way.
BL
I don't want to support those versions BL, my opinion hasnt changed, thats why I asked what others thought.
The problem is BL is that the site currently isn't as you put it very "interactive" it is more of a reference site which makes it a bit of a catch 22, if people aint asking questions theres nothing to interact with, so what can you do??
I think one of the main reasons for the drop of activity recently is probably due to the removal of this site from the community sites at the main php nuke site. A lot of people probably found out about the site through that system.
Also, perhaps add forums for people to discuss nuke and web related topics? At the moment, the forums are more directed towards support. It will give people an area to discuss rather than to ask questions. Also on the topic of the forum, should we make the 6x forums an archive seeing as that series is quite old now and not used much?
I definitely think we should keep this site up as it is a great resource for nuke and has helped a lot of people.
