Non Nuke Q&A - Got a general question about something, absolutely anything, html, web hosting, windows problems etc etc. Post in here.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista, anyone using it yet?

I'm in the process of d/loading it so I'll do a trial install soon and see how I like it.

Pretty happy with my current setup so it'll need to be pretty good to draw me away to a new start.

Before you install it, there's a site that's taken a screenshot of most if not all aspects of the interface. http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-vista-in-pictures/

Also, I don't think i'll be upgrading for quite some time yet, no need to

Microsoft suck with newborns. I'll wait until its been hacked and trashed and re written before I indulge....

Will look forward to reading what you think!!! Smile

Well I installed it tonight and in all honesty it has nothing extra that I need in comparison to XP.

It just seems like an overbloated XP SP2 if I'm totally honest.

And I can get that Vista type look in XP

Here's my Vista desktop

So apart from a glassy looking theme what bells and jangles does it have... or is it XP with a load of toot no one but the gadget lover will need?

I'm 'happy' with XP on my pc and XP mc on my laptop... the other pc's in the house run on Linux which as well as being free has tons of addons.

Well the install is about 3 times larger than XP, 6GB approx so there must be much more toys and bloat.

I'm sure there's a helluva lot of difference as far as the stuff you don't see.

ball cox to it then... I'll stick with the crud they sold me 3 years ago!!!

lmao

There are soooo many reason at the moment why I will not be touching Vista with a barge pole. heres a couple though...

The embedded security at kernel level is more trouble than its worth - a LOT of third party utilities such as AV / Firewalls and stuff will cease to function...

It is partly a marketing ploy to get people to buy higher specced PC's as to run the Aero interface smoothly you really need a top notch system.

Of the reviews I have seen so far most of the IT iindustry support kind of people are warning against using it.

For some very good reading on it check out www.theregister.co.uk - particulary Thomas Greene's and do a search within their site for Vista.

Isn't every windows version.

It gives my system a rating of 1.0 Laughing

Well I just bought a laptop and it's running Vista Home Premium, with this version you're able to use aero unlike Vista Home Basic.

Anyway, vista seems very quick and stable and I havent had any issues yet, here's my current desktop, its a widescreen laptop so the image may look a little unusual.

I was meant to get a free vista up[garde with my lappy.....

All I have had is excuses from Vista why I cant have it!!

blergh....

looks pants anyway.

Gotta say I'm really liking the stabilty.

Not a single crash or lockup yet.

Greetings

I work in email support serving a large European utility. We have just taken the decision to not support Vista (for now). There are still too many bugs with regard to accessing your mailbox through Explorer - though Firefox works fine!

Cheers, tall Paul from Chester.
